What Coquitlam yards need
A lot of Coquitlam is built on hills. On Burke Mountain, Westwood Plateau and Eagle Ridge, yards often need a retaining wall to hold the slope, and fences that step down with the grade instead of leaving gaps underneath.
In older neighbourhoods like Maillardville, Austin Heights and Ranch Park, the job is more often replacing a tired cedar fence, putting in a paver driveway, or swapping a worn-out lawn for turf or river rock.

Before you build in Coquitlam
These are the City rules that most often decide how tall a fence or wall can be. Rules change, so check with the City for your lot, or ask us when you text.
- Fence height
- Up to 1.8 m (about 6 ft) behind the front of the house, and up to 1.3 m (about 4 ft 3 in) in front of it.
- Corner lots
- Fences, walls and hedges are limited to 1 m within 6 m of the corner, so drivers can see around it.
- A fence on a retaining wall
- The wall and fence together can be up to 3 m tall.
- Retaining walls
- Walls over 1.2 m (4 ft) need a building permit and an engineer’s design. The City doesn’t allow walls over 2.4 m (8 ft). Walls over 0.6 m (2 ft) should have a guard or fence on top.

Only if it’s over 1.2 m (4 ft). Those need a building permit and an engineer’s design. Shorter walls don’t need a permit but still have to meet the BC Building Code.
