Deck work we do
- New decks
- Ground-level and raised decks built on solid footings, with stairs down to the yard.
- Rebuilds and resurfacing
- If the frame is still sound, we replace the boards and railings. If it isn’t, we tear it out and build new.
- Second-storey decks
- Raised decks off an upper floor, with stairs to the yard and the space underneath left open or closed in.
- Covered decks
- A pergola-style roof over the deck, with clear panels that keep the rain off and let the light through.
- Stairs and under-deck storage
- Exterior stairs with grip strips, and slat screens with doors that turn the space under a deck into storage.
If your deck needs a building permit, we apply for it and book the inspections.

Decking and railings
- Pressure-treated wood
- The most affordable deck. Strong and rot-resistant, with a stain or sealer every few years to keep it looking good.
- Cedar
- Natural colour and grain, and naturally rot-resistant. Refinish it to keep the colour, or let it weather to silver-grey.
- Composite
- Boards like Trex and TimberTech. More up front, but no staining or sanding, and no splinters.
- Vinyl membrane
- A waterproof vinyl surface for decks over a room, carport or garage, so the space underneath stays dry.
- Aluminum picket railings
- Powder-coated aluminum that doesn’t rot, rust or need painting.
- Wood railings
- Built to match a cedar or pressure-treated deck.
Railings and permits
A deck has to meet the BC Building Code, and most raised or covered decks need a permit. When yours does, we take care of it.
- When a railing is needed
- Once a deck is more than 600 mm (2 ft) above the ground, it needs a guard (railing) around it.
- How tall
- At least 900 mm (36 in), and at least 1070 mm (42 in) once the deck is more than 1.8 m (6 ft) off the ground.
- Gaps and climbing
- Openings have to stop a 100 mm (4 in) ball, and nothing a child could climb can sit between 140 mm and 900 mm up.
- Port Coquitlam
- A building permit is needed to build a deck, add to one, repair one or put a roof over it.
- Maple Ridge
- A deck with a roof attached, glass railings, or a cantilever over 24 in needs an engineer’s design.
Railing rules from the BC Building Code, as set out in the District of North Vancouver’s deck bulletin. City rules from Port Coquitlam’s deck permit page and Maple Ridge’s Residential Deck Application Guidelines. Checked October 2026; rules differ by city, so we confirm them for your address.

Deck questions
Do I need a permit for my deck?
Usually, if it’s more than 600 mm (2 ft) off the ground or has a roof over it. Port Coquitlam also wants one for adding to or repairing a deck. When yours needs a permit, we apply for it and book the inspections.
Composite or wood: which should I pick?
Wood costs less up front. Composite costs more but skips the staining and sanding. Send us photos and rough measurements and we can quote both.
Can you put new boards on my old deck?
Often, yes. If the frame and footings are sound, we replace the decking and railings. If the frame is rotten, we’ll show you and quote a rebuild.
Can you build a roof over my deck?
Yes. A pergola-style roof with clear panels keeps the rain off and lets the light in. In Maple Ridge, a roof attached to a deck needs an engineer’s design.
What is a vinyl membrane deck?
A waterproof vinyl surface laid over a plywood deck, so a deck can sit over a room, carport or garage and keep the space below dry.
Do you build second-storey decks?
Yes. Raised decks off an upper floor, with stairs to the yard and aluminum or wood railings.
