What’s under our artificial turf

Turf only stays flat if the base under it is right. This is what goes in before the turf is rolled out.

Illustration, not to scale. Depths and materials vary with the site.
  1. Turf blades Soft, UV-stable blades that stay green all year.
  2. Infill sand Brushed into the blades to hold them upright and weigh the turf down.
  3. Turf backing Perforated so rain drains straight through.
  4. Fine levelling layer A thin layer of screenings, raked smooth so no bumps show through.
  5. Compacted gravel base Crushed gravel, compacted in layers. This is what keeps turf flat for years.
  6. Landscape fabric Separates the base from the soil and blocks weeds from below.
  7. Native soil The old lawn and soil are dug out first to make room for the base.
  8. Edging Timber or bender board holds the edge so the base and turf can’t spread.
  9. Turf nails Driven through the backing along the edges and seams.

Lawn to river rock

We dug out the old lawn around this tree with a mini excavator, then lined it and filled it with river rock.

What we do

Artificial turf
Old lawn dug out, a compacted gravel base laid, then turf rolled out, pinned, trimmed tight at the edges and brushed with infill sand. Green all year, no mowing.
Sod
Old lawn and weeds dug out, the ground levelled and new sod laid tight.
River rock
Dug out, lined with landscape fabric and filled with washed river rock. Good for side yards, strips along driveways and around trees.
Stepping stones
Stones set into rock make a path that drains well and never needs mowing.
Edging
Timber or steel edging keeps rock and lawn apart.

Turf, sod and rock questions

Artificial turf or sod?

Turf stays green all year with no mowing or watering, and costs more up front. Sod is real grass, costs less to install, and needs water and mowing.

What goes under artificial turf?

We dig out the old lawn, lay and compact a gravel base, roll out the turf, pin and trim the edges, then brush in infill sand to hold the blades up.

Does landscape fabric stop weeds under river rock?

It stops weeds growing up from the soil. Some seeds still blow in and sprout on top, so pull those while they’re small.

How do I look after new sod?

Water it every day for the first couple of weeks so the roots take, and keep off it until it’s rooted.
